10 Tips for Helping the Kids Plan a Day Out
Article from: My Family UK
Planning a day out is good for a child's imagination, as well as their organisational skills and sense of independence. If you have two or more kids, why not make a tradition of it, and help each child plan a day out in turn.
1) What do they want to do?
Let your child take the lead and tailor a trip or treat to what they are interested in or what they want to learn about. Try not to lead them too much, or limit what they can do, as this will only impede the fun. Do try to regulate their excitement, however, so that they don't get too let down by a rainy day!
2) What's on?
Research museums, theme parks and other likely places and see if there are any festivals or other activities happening in your local area.
3) Where to find information
For more information and ideas about entertainment and ideas on a local and national scale, see the Directory of Outdoor Activities. Also search for museums, theme parks or anything else, online.
4) What's the weather forecast?
A rainy day will hamper your options so find out in advance whether it is wise to plan an indoor trip or take your chances outside. BBC Weather will give you a five day forecast wherever you are in the UK.
5) The details
Once you have decided where to go, help your kids to research more about it. Where is it? What are the opening times and entry prices? How far is it from where you live? Do you need to book in advance? Is there a restaurant there or somewhere nearby for eating out?
6) Getting there
An important part of planning your day out is working out how to get there. Consult timetables for public transport and work out your route on a map if you need to drive. Planning the route and navigating will also encourage kids to behave.
7) What to take
Work out what you will need with you - cameras, umbrellas and so on. You might also want to take a healthy packed lunch.
8) Don't over-plan
It will be tempting for you and your little planners to try and fit too much in, so avoid cramming your day full of activities and build in time for breaks and relaxation.
9) Itinerary time
Write down a plan for the day detailing what you will do at what time and including any important info such as opening times and train times.
10) Don't worry if things don't go to plan
There is no need to stick to this itinerary too rigidly. Go with the flow and make the most of your time together. After all, you're supposed to be having fun.
