The tilt of the earth about it's axis (which is about 23 degrees), earth's position in space (orbit around the sun), and the distance sun rays travel to reach the surface, all influence climate (i.e. seasons)

During winter months (above the equator), the earth's tilt relative to the sun causes the sun's energy to travel further to reach the earth's surface. Latitudes above the equator are furthest away from the sun) During summer months, the opposite is true, higher latitudes are tilted closer to the sun.. and lower latitudes (below the equator) experience the opposite.

That's why it is cold (Fall/Winter) in the upper lattitudes now (fall)...and the lower lattitudes are going into Spring then Summer.

I could get more complicated but this is a plain as I could do it. Some will argue that distance from the sun doesn't affect temperature, but I think it does.
