Basically the sun provides all of the energy available on the earth (except for some minor friction energy created by gravitational fluctuations)

Without energy plants would not grow, animals would not have plants (or other animals) for food.

Without the sun's energy the earth would be a solid mass, frozen. No air currents to rise or fall to make wind or any other kind of weather.

Chemically, a frozen mass would not be very chemically active. Many chemical reactions require the addition of heat energy or need a suitable thermal environment to take place.
